30gb zune "y2k" bug, microsoft layoffs rumors

"Just yesterday the web surged with news that 30 GB Zunes were freezing up, apparently the victim of a Y2K-type clock bug where the Zunes rebooted and froze as of January 1, 2009 Pacific Time. And this morning, Ars Technica reports that rumors are flying about a massive layoff on January 15 involving 17 percent of the worldwide work force. hello from the future- some reasonable predictions

every few years i come up with a reasonable idea that i actually see on the market a few years later. despite this, no one hires me for a couple hundred thousand dollars to think of this stuff. here are a few examples: mp3's: sort of. you'd have to see me with a 386, sampling an entire song from cassette. what the hell, it was the future. i felt it was. but you coudln't fit more than one album onto a 300 mb (not gb) drive. digital still cameras: i saw them coming when i got flatbed scanner. a… Continue

youtube adds new rules, two of which may affect epic fu's channel

the good side of "no homo"

generally speaking, i think "no homo" is a pretty negative thing. on top of that, it's very silly, but then people are often very silly. i don't know if there is a good side to "no homo," but if there is, it's that it would make it easier for men that are not totally comfortable with homosexuals (and there are too many people that are not totally comfortable) to easily pay each other a compliment for once. for instance, there's a person on mix who is so much better looking than their avatar. s… Continue

Just talking with other teachers in the school, we all feel that if we could only teach one thing it would be to teach in a way students can learn more. Just like you are saying I have so many students that complain about using a pc over a mac or visa versa and I think we should be teaching in a way where that becomes irrelevant so that they can (as you put it so well) learn to learn apps.

I Guess what I mean by software is more programing aspect so maybe basic software engineering which could be really helpful to some kids that might have problems in math. Just another way to relate a field into a skill. There is a lot of room for improvement and I hope with the direction society is going technology wise we can bring something more to the table.

Kinda like a comedian (i forgot who it was) once said what would happen if all the computer technicians that are working now just disappear. Would we have the man power or knowledge as every day people to fix things so that it works? Technology has far surpassed the average day person. It isn't like the way technology use to be. People could still fix a car out of necessity but could a person do the same for a complex computer system running a nuclear power plant? I'm not all to sure and although I'm not going for that at high school level i do however feel we can familiarize our youth a wee bit better than just using it as a tool.

Sure it builds some good skill sets and tools to be used as students go off for college and even in the workforce.

Yet, I feel like that would be the equivalent of teaching the math equations without teaching the math behind them. We could teach our students the "tools" for math but we would just be disabling them for higher thinking.

So the coming year I hope to be able to teach a Introduction to Computers class. Which would be a board look at Computer Science (Hardware, Software, Architecture).

So we would move from the applications and talk about theory. Really the history of Computer Science and focus more on things like Computer Programing, Computer Hardware. Where as now like I said the students are only really getting one semester of Computer Applications which is entirely word, excel, and powerpoint. We also do offer some other media classes like a web design class, and a graphic design. Yet i still feel it falls short of some of the main principles of "Computer Science."

What made me do it? Thats a question a lot of people ask. Some times teaching can be a rather thankless job. I was inspired by a teacher once, which lead me to my BA in Computer Science. I loved being a part of a field I enjoy. So really I'm just hoping I can give back in some way try to inspire some students into maybe doing the same. As of right now the State of Colorado doesn't have any "technology" standards really its kind of more how will a school use the technology as a tool rather than how can we teach students technology. So I hope to maybe one day work on that maybe we can get some standards on computer science. In the end that is the field we are teaching. Living the world today it is such a important field of study I am not sure why they have not fast tracked this issue to get something more solid. There is however a national standard which will help in the end, but I still believe the focus needs to be diverted not into this idea of "technology" but a field that needs to be taught to students just like any other field of study.

In the end, the students we can inspire will be the next great invention in our life and from what statistics show we are already losing interest in that field, there are fewer and fewer Graduates in Computer Science.
